MA Program

With a focus on applied economics, our MA program will provide you with relevant analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as theoretical and empirical skills. Our well-established co-op option allows you to supplement your academic education with an 8-month work term and on the job learning. The work term serves as a stepping stone to a career for many of our graduates.

The Department offers two MA programs

Admission Requirements

• Honours bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)

• Strong preparation in economics and in the mathematical tools needed to be successful in the program, including the following university-level courses:

– two semesters of intermediate and/or advanced microeconomics

– two semesters of intermediate and/or advanced macroeconomics

– at least one semester of mathematical economics or equivalent. (Note that two semesters of mathematical economics are highly recommended or equivalently two semesters of calculus and one of linear algebra.)

 – at least two semesters of statistics and/or econometrics

• Two academic letters of reference

• GRE is not required for domestic students but is recommended for all international students.

• Proof of competency in English may be required.

Applicants must hold, or expect to hold by the start of the program, an honours bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with at least a 75%, upper second class average in the last two years (20 credits). For students educated abroad, please see the Admission Guide for International Applicants.

Note that satisfaction of these minimum requirements does not imply automatic acceptance into the program. Preference is given to students who have also completed upper-year courses in advanced economic theory, econometrics, and mathematics. In recent years students admitted to the program have had at least an 80% average in their economic courses.
