APPLYING
- Please read the Application Checklist below before completing your online application
- Upload your application materials using Applicant Quest (Waterloo's self-service application system). You will be emailed within a few days of submitting your on-line application with instructions for using Quest.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST
Transcripts
- unofficial academic transcript from each post-secondary institution attended must be submitted, including all marks and the awarding of degrees
- only one file per institution can be uploaded (if you completed more than one degree at the same institution, both transcripts must be in one file)
- maximum file size is 500KB - use low resolution when scanning
- official academic transcripts (received in a closed univesity envelope) are only required if you are offered admission
- a certified translation is required if the transcript is not in English
- University of Waterloo transcripts are not required
- final Chinese documents must include transcripts, graduation diplomas and degree certificates in Chinese, all with official English translations
- notarized copies of transcripts and degree certificates are not acceptable
References
- Confidential Reference Forms are required - two for MA applications and three for PhD applications
- your referees will be emailed (within a few business days) with instructions on submitting forms electronically
- referees will be given a due date of approximately 14 days beyond the date of your on-line application to complete the form

Supplementary Information Form
- completed on-line using Quest (one-time submission only - when you enter SAVE the form is submitted and cannot be re-opened)
PhD Applicants
- Statement of Interest (maximum two pages). Explain your interest in Applied Economics and outline your research interests
- list your publications and/or submissions, if any, or NA if you have none
- list any ongoing or planned courses (if any) that are not listed on your transcript
- list programming languages/statistical packages/other software packages you have experience with
MA Applicants
- list any ongoing or planned courses (if any) that are not listed on your transcript
- if you expect to apply for the MA thesis option indicate the area of your research interest
Test Scores (if applicable)
- applicants who have not completed three or more years of post-secondary work at a Canadian institution, or at an institution at which English was the languare of instruction, or have not been employed for a similar period of time in a position in which English was the language of business are required to provide certification of English languate proficiency
- copies of test scores can be uploaded on Applicant Quest, or originals can be mailed directly by the testing agency

- TOEFL scores must be taken within the last 2 years of receipt of your application
- GRE Score (recommended for all international applicants)
- GRE scores are valid for 5 years from the test date
- 0996 is the Institution code and 84 is the Department code for TOEFL scores
- 0996 is the Institution code and 1801 is the Department code for GRE scores
Proof of Immigration Status (if applicable)
- Permanent Residents of Canada must upload a copy of their Record of Landing form (IMM 1000) or Permanent Residence card
- Student Visa/International applicants should not leave for Canada until they have a Letter of Acceptance issued by the University of Waterloo, Graduate Studies Office, and a Study Permit (IMM 1442) valid at the Univesity of Waterloo, issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
Sponsorship Letter (if applicable)
- indicate your sponsorship in the "Other" section of the online application under International Agreement and Awards/External Funding
- applicants receiving a scholarship/sponsorship from an external agency must email a PDF copy of the letter, detailing the duration and level of funding to gradapp@uwaterloo.ca
- agencies include the governments of Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Libya and Saudi Arabia, or sponsors such as CONACyT or the IITs
Writing Sample (for PhD applicants only)
- provide a sample of your written academic work of less than about 10 pages. (Copy and Paste an excerpt from a course paper, research report, etc., or provide a link to the source.)

- admission decisions will be posted on Quest
- all documents, including transcripts, submitted to the Univesity of Waterloo become the property of the Univesity and will not be returned
