The Canadian Health Economics Study Group meets annually. Participants are usually faculty members and graduate students affiliated to Canadian universities and individuals working in the government sector (Health Canada, provincial ministries of Health), partly state-controlled organizations or research institutes. Researchers affiliated to universities outside of Canada also regularly attend the meeting. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to submit their research (the conference fee of $100 is waived). In the past graduate students often presented their own research or formally discussed another researcher’s work so that the conference series advances education of PhD students. Topics covering both theoretical and empirical economics are discussed. Each paper will be allotted 45 minutes of which twenty five are given to the author to present, ten minutes are given to a discussant to comment on the paper and ten minutes are used for discussion from the floor. All participants to the conference are expected to attend all sessions and to have read the research papers prior to the meeting. The conference will consist of a full day of presentations on May 26th and a half day of presentations on May 27th. There are no parallel sessions. A total of ten papers will be selected for presentation using a double-blinded process. Papers will be selected on the basis of academic quality alone; there is no theme for the conference.

Registration is now open. Please fill out the registration form (fillable pdf-format) and return it to chesg@uwaterloo.ca before May 10. Thank you.

We blocked a number of rooms in two local hotels that offer pleasant accommodation. Price is about $140 per night (accommodation in Waterloo is somewhat pricy).

·         The Waterloo Hotel (although the rooms are not blocked for CHESG, you can take advantage of the conference price, subject to availability)

2 King Street North, Waterloo, ON N2J 2W7, 519-885-2626 (Downtown Waterloo)

In walking distance to conference venue (about 2km)

·         Waterloo Inn (although the rooms are not blocked for CHESG, you can take advantage of the conference price, subject to availability)

475 King Street North, Waterloo, ON N2J 2Z5, 519-884-0220

A bit further out and maybe not an overly nice walk to campus (about 3km)

We also blocked rooms in the University Residences. Make reservation before 48 hours prior to the conference. CHESG rates are 10% lower than the prices quoted on their website, e.g., a single room is $45 per night plus taxes (5% GST and 5% GST). To check in, go to the Conference Centre in Ron Eydt Village at the North-West end of UW Campus (Columbus Street West). Building code REV on campus map. You can make your reservation by phone 1-800-565-5410 or online (to get reduced rates you have to enter “CHESG” in the first field of the form.)

Note the following:

1.      You have to refer to CHESG to get reduced rates.

2.      You are responsible for the actual reservation of your room.

3.      Free parking is included in all three options.

The conference is held in Art Lecture Hall (Building Code AL) and is best reached from University Avenue West. Should you come by car, there is visitor coin parking available at Seagram Drive ($3 per day) and right in beside the visitor centre of the University of Waterloo on University Avenue ($10 per day). The latter parking lot is in front of Hagey Hall (Building Code HH) where the Economics Department happens to be located. AL is right behind HH.

For more information (campus map, parking, driving directions and public transportation) please click here. If you need even more information (Greyhound, ViaRail) please click here.

If you have to take a plane to get to South-Western Ontario the easiest way to get to Waterloo is to fly into Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Ground transportation is available. For a shared van you may wish to consider Airways Transit ($75, depending on the number of drop-offs and traffic this may take you something between 90 minutes and, if you are very unlucky, 3 hours). Should you prefer a limo, check Airflight Services ($128, depending on traffic a 90 minutes to 2 hours ride).

You may wish to consider Waterloo International Airport (YKF). This may be particularly attractive if you can fly with, say, WestJet.
