The Department of Economics encourages students in good academic standing to seek international or exchange experience by studying abroad for one or two terms. Since course credits obtained elsewhere are transferable toward the UW Degree, the UW guidelines for course selection will be applied to students on exchange.
Please read the following guidelines carefully. You may then submit your Exchange application, along with a copy of your Quest transcript and the relevant course description from your host university, to the Department of Economics for approval. Please drop off the Exchange application package in HH 214. You are welcome to see the Econ advisor in HH 208 for academic consultation.
1. Guidelines on Econ Course Selection at the Host University:
a. All Arts students on Exchange must first seek approval from the UW Exchange Program Director (Prof. Robert Ryan) in the Arts Exchange Office in PAS-2417. If you are not in Arts, please consult the Exchange academic adviser in your faculty.
b. Indicate clearly on your Exchange application form, the name of the host university, the academic term you plan to attend at this university and a list of courses. List no more than two Econ courses and one alternate Econ course in the event that you are unable to enrol in all the courses of your choice.
c. For each course requested, include the official host university’s course description, even if the course description is in a foreign language.
d. Indicate clearly the specific UW course or degree requirement that you wish to satisfy.
e. It is the responsibility of each student on Exchange to check the start and the end dates of the term at the host university. That the term at the host university may not mesh with UW term dates may delay the completion of degree requirements at UW.
f. It is your responsibility to check the transfer credit policy for your Faculty as well as the policies regarding residency requirements for your Faculty.
2. Exchange Guidelines for students choosing Econ courses
a. Econ students who wish to study abroad must have at least a 70% average in their UW Econ courses. Please note that most partner universities require an overall average of at least 75%.
b. Econ students are encouraged to take Econ elective courses abroad. Unless special permission is granted, Econ students may not take required core courses such as Econ 301, 302, 321, 401 and 402, at the host university.
c. No UW student, whether on campus or on Exchange, may claim non-Econ courses for UW Econ course credits. This is so even if the same textbooks have been used.
